Still My Brian

by Abigail Beal

“Mom, would you love me if I had a tail?” Brian asked his mother one night.

“Yes I would love you. You would still be my Brian.” His mother answered him.

“Would you love me if I had big floppy ears that made me fly?” Brian asked

“Yes I would love you. You would still be my Brian…up in the air.” His mother said.

“Would you love me if I had big purple spots?”

“I would still love you even covered with purple spots. You would still be my Brian.”

“Would you love me if I was eight feet tall…or very, very small?”

“Yes I would love you. You would still be my Brian if you could reach the trees or at any size.”

“Would you love me if I only wore very tall hats?”

“I would hold doors open for you. I would love you and you would still be my Brian.”

“Would you love me if I only ate stacks and stacks of maple syrup covered flapjacks?”

“I would get out my griddle and make another stack of flapjacks for you Brian.” His mother answered him firmly.

“Would you love me if I left all of the lights on while I slept every night?”

“I would still love you and kiss you good night – and tell you to shut your eyes really, really tight!”

“Would you love me if I took baths with the dog?” Brian asked.

“I would still love you and you would still be my Brian. Do you want to shake dry like the dog does?” his mother asked him.

Brian was silent for what seemed like a very long time.

“It seems that you really do love me Mom,” Brian finally said

“Yes I do Brian. I love you with a tail, eight feet tall, very small, eating flapjacks and taking baths with the dog. But most of all I love you because you are my son!”

Brian decided he didn’t need a tail after all. He’s still thinking about taking a bath with the dog.
