THE SEVEN SACRAMENTS

What is a Sacrament? A Sacrament is  a visible sign, instituted by Christ, to give grace.

The Seven Sacraments are:

  • Baptism
  • Reconciliation
  • Holy Communion
  • Confirmation
  • Marriage
  • Holy Orders
  • Anointing of the Sick

Baptism
Baptism is the first Sacrament of Initiation.  Traditionally it is performed when we are infants at a Baptismal font in Church.
Through Baptism we are freed from sin and become sons of God. We are reborn with "water from the Word."

Reconciliation -
Reconciliation is a special gift of grace from God. We confess our sins to the priest and we are forgiven. Without the grace of Reconciliation, we are still hanging on to our sins. This is an opportunity to rid ourselves of these sins and walk in friendship with God.

Holy Communion
Holy Communion is receiving the Body and Blood of Christ in the Eucharist at Mass. In order to receive the Eucharist, one must be free from mortal sin and be in communion (agreement) with the Church.  If you are in a state of mortal sin, you must go to confession before being free to receive the sacrament of Holy Communion.

Confirmation
In the sacrament of Confirmation, we literally become soldiers for Christ.  We confirm our faith and receive the Holy Spirit so that we have the strength to carry on in our faith despite the pressures of the world. The sacrament is issued by the Bishop and he anoints us with Chrism. Through Confirmation, the confirmed is now fully part of the life of the church.  As in Baptism, this sacrament marks our soul forever as belonging to God.

 Marriage
The Sacrament of marriage is a lifetime covenant of partnership between a man and a woman.  When two baptized people are married, it is not just an agreement, but it becomes a sacrament.

Holy Orders
This sacrament is for those being called to consecrated life through ordination. Ordination is the rite through which a man becomes a priest, deacon or bishop.

Anointing of the Sick
This sacrament is for those who are dying and who are going through physical or emotional pain as a result of serious illness or old age. This can be received more than once.
